Summary
I believe passionately in the clinical application and teaching of the importance of undertaking a comprehensive analysis of movement and function to identify the relationship between cause and symptoms of musculoskeletal problems .The management of patients should be the application of appropriate interventions, my particular skills being manual therapy and exercise in particular correction of movement dysfunction /motor control. I believe that a close working relationship and communication with other members of the patient's medical team is fundamental to a successful outcome.

Ruth qualified as a physiotherapist in 1986 and over the course of her career has specialised in the musculoskeletal field. She completed an MSc in Manual Therapy in 1999 and was awarded Fellowship of the Manipulation Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in 2008. In addition to clinical work, Ruth has extensive teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate level including leadership of the Advanced Musculoskeletal Practice and Manual Therapy MSc programmes at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). In February 2004, Ruth gained the position of Consultant Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist at NHS Knowsley, a post which has research and educational links with both the University of Manchester and MMU. Ruth has had vast experience of redesigning services for patients with musculoskeletal pathology and has led the development and implementation of a Musculoskeletal Clinical Assessment and Treatment Service (MCAS) integrating both community and acute Trust musculoskeletal services.

Ruth has promoted and added to the evidence base in the musculoskeletal field. She has recently published a study carried out with Manchester University assessing the clinical outcomes in the MCAS which is one of the few studies of this type in the UK. Ruth’s work on spinal red flag pathways was awarded the British Society for Back Pain Research Presidents Award. She has presented at national conferences on various subjects within her area of expertise. Ruth has always been an active member of the MACP and has contributed to various committees over the course of her membership including being a founder member of the Committee for Educational Approval.

Dr Alison Rushton EdD, MSc, Grad Dip Phys, DipTP, FHEA, FCSP, FMACP, Hon CAMPT

Alison is Professor and Director of Physical Therapy at Western University, Canada. Alison has a strong research profile, with £426K active funding, >£1.6M previous funding, £10M research centre funding, £1 million internal investment, and >150 publications in high impact journals. Alison has supervised 12 PhDs (7 as lead supervisor, 8 in progress), >15 MRes, >200 MSc students; and has examined 15 PhD theses. Alison’s research is at the forefront of enhancing our understanding of the assessment and management of musculoskeletal disorders, focused on precision rehabilitation for spinal problems; and she leads the IFOMPT cervical framework research group. Alison is an Associate Editor of Plos One, a member of the Editorial Board of the Musculoskeletal Science and Practice journal, and a fellow of the MACP in the UK and a member of CAMPT in Canada.

Alison has chaired the IFOMPT Standards Committee since 2004 and was previously the Member Organisation Delegate for the UK. Within the MACP, Alison has previously chaired the Committee for Education and Approval and was Vice Chair of the Executive Committee.

Alison has also been awarded Honorary membership of the OMT Espana Terapia Manual Ortopedica, and a Fellowship of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy for her national and international contribution to the development of musculoskeletal physiotherapy through the development of education and research.  Alison maintains an Honorary Reader position at the University of Birmingham, UK.

Alison’s vision for musculoskeletal physiotherapy is high quality international standards of education and research enabling the MACP to be a global leader in advanced practice musculoskeletal physiotherapy. She is a strong advocate for research underpinning practice and development of advanced roles, and works globally to support development of groups and individual physiotherapists in a range of countries who aspire for excellence in musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

Karen has worked at the University of Hertfordshire since 1996 and is Associate Head in the School of Health and Emergency Professions with responsibility for postgraduate and commercial activities. She is a past chair of the MACP and is a member of the IFOMPT Standards Committee. She has been a member of the Editorial Committee of Manual Therapy journal since its inception. Manual Therapy is a peer reviewed international journal and she is responsible for the Masterclass section, which showcases contemporary clinical issues. Her research interests are in haemophilia and quality of life and this was the focus of her PhD. She has presented at conferences across the world and has also been involved in the organisation of a wide range of events through university, national and international committees that she is involved with. She was awarded a Fellowship of the CSP in 2008 and the MACP in 2009 in recognition of my contribution to professional practice, promotion of education and research and development of the professions knowledge base and so has an in-depth understanding of the professional development needs of the physiotherapy profession. Her background and expertise means that she bring a wealth of experience of how to produce a highly successful, innovative, evidence based and well organised conference.

Nikki Petty qualified as a Chartered Physiotherapist from Newcastle Polytechnic in 1979. After a few years in clinical practice in Northumberland and a year in Saudi Arabia, she moved to Australia to undertake a Graduate Diploma in Manipulative Therapy at La Trobe University in Melbourne as a full time overseas student. She successfully completed this in 1986 and was recipient of the Graduate Research Prize. She returned to the UK and took up an outpatient post at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and became a Superintendent III Physiotherapist with responsibility for MSK education across the Trust. She acted as clinical supervisor for the South East Thames Spinal Manipulation Course, was a tutor for MACP weekend courses and for 7 years acted as examiner for the MACP entry examinations. In 1991, she moved into Higher Education to the recently opened School of Physiotherapy at the University of Brighton. At that time she taught musculoskeletal physiotherapy and anatomy at undergraduate level. After successfully completing a research dissertation on the effects of lumbar spine PA mobilisations on sagittal mobility of the lumbar spine (subsequently published in Manual Therapy), she upgraded her Graduate Diploma to an MSc at Coventry University in 1995. The following year, she led the programme development of an MSc in Manipulative Physiotherapy which took its first cohort in 1997 and remained course leader until 2009. During this period she was editor for the MACP newsletter, 'Touch-Note' for 6 years. In 1997 the MACP Course Approval Board (later Committee for Education and Approval) was initiated and she became a founder member, vice chair and chair over the following 12 years. Nikki was a member of the MACP executive committee from 1999 to 2002 and from 2007 to 2009. She acted as external examiner and MACP assessor for musculoskeletal physiotherapy MSc programmes at Sheffield and Coventry.
In 2001, she was made President of the Sussex Downs Branch of the CSP and vice president the year after. She undertook a Doctorate in Physiotherapy (DPT) from University of Brighton from 2003 to 2009. Her thesis was entitled 'towards clinical expertise: learning transitions of neuromusculoskeletal physiotherapists' and published research papers in Physiotherapy and Manual Therapy during 2011. In 2009 she took up a faculty role as Programme Leader of the Professional Doctorate in Health and Social Care. During this same year, she became founder member and membership secretary of the national steering group of the Professional and Practice-based Doctoral Research Special Interest Group and served on this for 3 years. She was a member of the Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Australia (MMPA) from 1986 to 1996 and was a member of the MACP from 1987 until 2009, when she became a Fellow of the MACP.

She has written two textbooks on neuromusculoskeletal examination and assessment and neuromusculoskeletal treatment and management (published by Elsevier) which have been translated into 5 languages. She has upward of 25 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has presented at over 25 national and international conferences, thirteen of which as an invited speaker. She has received a number of professional grant awards to present her research at international conferences including the MACP IFOMT Presentation Award in 2008 and was awarded the 1996 and 2001 Cardon Award for Excellence for research articles by the Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy. She has been a reviewer for Manual Therapy since 1995 and on the international advisory board since 1999.

She is currently Principal Lecturer at the School of Health Professions, University of Brighton. Her main roles are Programme Leader of the Professional Doctorate in Health and Social Care and Course Leader of the MRes (Clinical Research). She teaches neuromusculoskeletal physiotherapy at postgraduate level and research methods at undergraduate and postgraduate level and acts as reviewer for both the School and Faculty Research Ethics and Governance Committees. She is a journal reviewer several journals. She supports the university wide Grounded Theory Special Interest Group which runs regular seminars throughout the year for staff and doctoral students. In 2012, she became Hub leader for Sussex and Surrey Allied Health Professions Research Network (AHPRN). She is currently supervising several doctoral students and gaining examing experience.

Roger Kerry

Roger Kerry is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Nottingham, UK.  He is a Chartered Physiotherapist, and an Honorary Fellow of the UK’s Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists. His main clinical research interests have been in adverse events and physiotherapy interventions of the head and neck, particularly on the causal nature of the interventions. Roger is a member of several international working groups related to best practice for the management of head and neck pain. Roger also undertakes research activity in the Philosophy of Science, investigating the nature of causation in evidence-based healthcare and clinical reasoning - this was the focus of his PhD. He is well- published in these areas and has been an invited speaker at numerous international conferences. Roger has won several teaching awards, including two prestigious Lord Dearing Awards for Teaching & Learning following his work on the use of social media in education. In other news, Roger is an ultra-runner, a BBC Introducing singer-songwriter, and a member of the UK’s top Americana/Country band, Lawrence County.

Chris is a Consultant Physiotherapist for Western Sussex Foundation NHS Trust since January 2003. He is the clinical lead for musculoskeletal physiotherapy and the spinal triage clinic. He is also research and audit lead for therapies. He is a Fellow of the MACP and the CSP, and past Chair of the MACP. Claire is the Clinical Director at Pure Sports Medicine, a multi-disciplinary sports and musculoskeletal medicine clinic with 7 sites and 100 clinicians in central London. Her work is split between a clinical caseload, postgraduate teaching on the subject of the assessment and management of lumbopelvic/ hip conditions and responsibility for the clinical governance of the organisation to ensure excellence in clinical care. She is a lecturer and examiner on a number of postgraduate courses in Physiotherapy and Sports and Exercise Medicine within the UK and a journal reviewer for Manual Therapy, Physical Therapy in Sport and the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

A native of Australia, Claire completed both her undergraduate and Masters degrees in Physiotherapy at the University of Queensland. She came to London in 1995 and was fortunate to work alongside a number of MACP members at the clinic of Mr Peter Wells. She was a member of the PDC committee of the MACP from 1998-2001 and the Executive Committee from 2001-2004 where she served as Communications Officer. Recently, she was a member of the Organising Committee for the IFOMPT 2016 conference in Glasgow.

In 2015, she was named the Qantas Australian Woman of the Year in the UK for her entrepreneurial work in building a successful clinical organisation and her promotion of musculoskeletal healthcare, and in 2016 she was awarded as Fellowship of the MACP.

Mindy Cairns is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Hertfordshire, UK.
After qualifying as a physiotherapist in 1991, she worked clinically specialising in the treatment of musculoskeletal dysfunction, specifically spinal pain. After completing her MSc in Manipulative Therapy and gaining MACP membership in 1997, she pursued PhD studies whilst in a clinical/research role at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham.

Mindy was a member of the Executive Committee of the MACP, as Research Officer, from 2002-2008. She has published in numerous academic journals and reviews manuscripts for many journals including Manual Therapy, BMC Musculoskeletal, BMJ and Physiotherapy Research International. Mindy combines her research and teaching commitments with a two weekly musculoskeletal clinics and a busy family life.

Laura Finucane is a Consultant Physiotherapist specialising in spinal conditions. In 2002 she completed her masters degree in neuromusculoskeletal physiotherapy and became a member of the Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (MACP). She served on the MACP executive from 2006-2012. In 2012 she became a member of the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists (IFOMPT) executive and in 2016 she was elected as Vice president. She is the education and training lead for advanced practitioners and physiotherapists ensuring clinicians maintain their competency and expertise to deliver the service for SMSKP.

She is affiliated to the University of Brighton and is an external examiner and clinical mentor for the master’s course leading to membership of the MACP.

Laura’s special interest is in serious pathologies of the spine and she has presented nationally and internationally on this subject. She has written a number of papers related to serious pathology and teaches at a postgraduate level.

Neil Langridge

Neil is a Consultant Physiotherapist and senior lecturer in Physiotherapy at the University of Winchester who has been a member of the MACP since 2001. He was worked in the NHS, M.O.D and private sector. After completing his MSc at the University of Brighton he went on to complete a clinical doctorate at the University of Southampton publishing his work in the Journal Musculoskeletal Science and Practice.

Neil has presented on musculoskeletal practice across countries around the world, whilst teaching extensively in the UK in numerous environments and on 5 courses that have a route to MACP membership. He has served on the MACP committees as Chair of the CEA, research officer and Vice chair and supported the scientific committee for content at PhysioUK. His clinical work has taken him into primary care and as a clinical lead for HEE he has driven the first-contact model whilst supporting the educational needs for this particular area of clinical work. He continues to lead a large group of AHPs and maintain a strong NHS clinical focus.

Neil rejoined the Executive Committee in February 2020 as a co-opted Education Lead and in 2022 became Chair for the second time.

Susan Sriskandan

Sue is an Extended Scope Physiotherapist at Addenbrookes hospital in the spinal service in both the neurosurgery and rheumatology teams, and is also working in private practice.

After qualifying from Kings College Hospital in 1982 she worked at Westminster hospital with Jill Guymer where she developed her interest in the treatment of patients with spinal pain, completing the MACP courses for the spine. She gained her membership of the MACP in 1990, following completion of the Management of Musculoskeletal Dysfunction Course, the approved course to membership at that time.

Sue moved to Suffolk to work at Newmarket Hospital where she worked for 27 years continuing her mentoring of students on clinical placements, a role started at Westminster hospital.

She was part of the team to develop an MSc that led to membership of the MACP at the University of East Anglia. She was the clinical co-ordinator for the course and was subsequently made an honorary visiting fellow by the university.

Sue returned to her studies gaining her MSc in Physiotherapy from the University of Hertfordshire in 2007. She is an external assessor for the University of Birmingham assessing students at the completion of their clinical placement and has contributed to the development of the assessment process at both the University of Birmingham and the University of Hertfordshire.

Nicola Heneghan is a Senior Lecturer in Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation Sciences in the Centre of Precision Rehabilitation for Spinal Pain (CPR Spine), School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Birmingham.

Nicola works in education and research in musculoskeletal rehabilitation sciences and leads the MACP approved MSc Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy programme in Birmingham. Nicola’s research sits within CPR Spine utilising multidisciplinary expertise to advance the assessment and rehabilitation of patients with spinal pain. Nicola’s specific research interest is in thoracic pain and dysfunction in different patient populations as well as collaborative research in elite sport, spinal surgery, trauma, low back and neck pain. Nicola has published >80 articles, has a H-index of 19 and has contributed to >£1M in career research funding. She has supported >150 physiotherapists to successful completion of postgraduate degrees (MSc, MRes and PhD) and currently supervises students across all programmes.

Nicola has been active within the MACP for many years, sitting on a number of committees and holding a number of positions, including Education Lead (2012-2016), MO delegate for IFOMPT (2016-19), Vice chair (2014-2016) and Chair (2016-2019).

Jayne Davies

Jayne is Clinical Lead of ESP/Specialist and MSK Physio Services in Primary Care within Peterborough (Dynamic Health). 

Jayne qualified in 1984 and soon after specialised in MSK. She completed MSc at UEA gaining MACP membership. She has been involved in MACP mentorship and examination of MACP students since 2002. She has been guest lecturer on MSc modules leading to MACP membership 

She is passionately involved in Clinical Governance both within the NHS and for a private company (Rehabworks).

From early on in her career she sourced lecturers to run courses within East Anglia.

Jayne was the PDC Chair for 6 years creating and running a series of successful CPD courses for members and non-members.  She was made an MACP Fellow in 2021.
