Queen Mary's Physio Celebrates Her Olympian Past With Seb Coe

Queen Mary's Physio Celebrates Her Olympian Past With Seb Coe...........

The summer Olympics returns to London in 2012 after an absence of 64 years and some events will take place right on South London Healthcare Trust's own doorstep in Greenwich.
Elaine Willett, Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist, based at the Queen Mary's Sidcup site competed in the 1972 Munich Games and was one of more than 7,000 athletes from 121 nations taking part. Then aged 16 she was a member of GB's gymnastics team and competed against Olga Korbet the tiny Soviet gymnast then aged 15.

The Munich Games were marred by a terrorist attack resulting in the deaths of hostages, terrorists and one policeman. In defiance, the International Olympic Committee ordered the competition to resume after a pause of 34 hours. Other details about the Munich Games paled in significance, but it did have its highlights such as US swimmer Mark Spitz winning an incredible seven gold medals at the event.
As a past Olympian, Elaine was invited to a reception hosted by Sebastian Coe last week in Canary Wharf. Elaine said that "As well as meeting former and current Olympic stars, I met up with two of my former gymnastic team mates both of whom I hadn't seen for nearly 30 years. It was a great evening and I look forward to watching some of the athletic events in London in 2012".
Elaine competed at both national and international level from the age of 14 to 22. She retired from gymnastics aged 22 and decided to become a Physiotherapist. She now specialises in spines. She has worked here at Queen Mary's for more than 20 years.

E Willett
She enjoys cycling to work and golf. She has recently hiked to Everest Base Camp and this year is planning an 18 day trek to Annapurna.
