MACP members views sought on the new AHP Advisory Fitness for Work Report pilot........Click here to access Fitness Report.............
"Dear MSK Physiotherapist,
The pilot of the AHP Advisory Fitness for Work Report has now come to an end and the response from practitioners is causing concern. To do this I need evidence that physiotherapists value this tool and feel competent in advising employees, their employers and GPs on their ability to remain in work if advice is followed.
This does present an excellent opportunity to extend our role in areas which our skills are already, for the most part, established and really should be embraced. We know that many GPs really do not wish to be responsible for fit notes as they feel that their role lies in advocacy of the patient and therefore physiotherapy is a logical profession to take on this work should we demonstrate our ability to do so successfully.
I have spoken with Phil Gray and he considers it vital that MSK physiotherapists should lend their weight and support to this project and generate enthusiasm amongst members to respond to the call from the CSP. Failure to engage with this work will result in a backward profile of occupational health within physiotherapy, which, especially in the present climate, is not good.
Physiotherapists are facing increasing challenges from other professions into our areas of expertise, but occupational health is proving to be an area where physiotherapists, with the correct skills, are excelling.
Phil and I therefore asking you for urgent support in persuading your professional network to look at the attached form and then log onto surveymonkey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/AHPfitnessreport to give their opinion on its value, ease-of-use and effectiveness in supporting employees to remain in work following illness or injury.
Very many thanks,
Léonie Dawson, MCSP, PG Dip,
