Bio:

Caroline is an experienced musculoskeletal physiotherapist who has been working in the specialty for the past sixteen years. She has a vast amount of NHS experience, as well as experience in the private musculoskeletal setting. Her primary clinical interests are Upper Limb disorders, Rheumatology, Widespread Pain conditions and biopsychosocial management.

Caroline became a member of the MACP through the academic route, after completing her MSc in Advanced Physiotherapy at the University of Hertfordshire. Her dissertation on the Management of Atraumatic Shoulder Instability received the both the MACP’s Student Research Award and MSc/PGDip Award. It was subsequently presented as a poster at the World Physiotherapy Congress and is published in a peer-reviewed journal. She has subsequently gone on to publish additional research on other subjects.

Caroline has an interest in innovation and service development and has led various successful service development and quality improvement projects, as well as promoted a broader research culture as part of her NHS role. This has included building links with consultants and the wider service, including acting as Principal Investigator on the ARTISAN Trial. 

Caroline’s passion for education and research have led her into her role as a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire, teaching on the MACP accredited programme and supporting research modules, as well as her work with the Physiotherapy Research Society.

Bio:

Sharon is an experienced clinical academic in musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy, with diverse experience across clinical, academic, education and quality agenda areas regionally and nationally.

She has been specializing in MSK since 2004 and became an advanced MSK physiotherapist in 2007. Her academic record includes Professional Doctoral in Physiotherapy and MSc in Musculoskeletal Medicine. She has extensive post graduate training including injection therapy, NMP, cognitive-behavioral therapy, pain management, and the CSP leadership programme. In 2024, Sharon successfully completed the MACP accelerated portfolio programme, which is a recognition of meeting consultant level of practice and International MSK standards of practice set by IFMOPT. She is the first physiotherapist in the UK, and internationally, with a dual SOMM Fellowship and MACP Membership.

Sharon has been actively involved in post graduate MSK education since 2009. She is currently Co-Lead of Portfolio Route, MACP, and Module Lead of the Injection Therapy, SOMM. She has a strong track record of conference presentations and publications. In 2023, she co-authored and published the 5th edition of ‘The Practical Approach to Musculoskeletal Medicine’, which is a seminal textbook in the field.

Sharon is passionate about driving standards in improving and supporting MSK health and MSK education. She is currently co-chair of the UK MSK Partnership Group.

Elaine Dechow MSc MMACP MCSP 

Elaine has been a Clinical Mentor taking postgraduate Clinical placements for 5 University MSc MSK programmes and has taught on MSc MSK modules in 3 universities. 

She is currently working at Poole hospital for University Hospital Dorset as an Advanced Spinal Practitioner and is a mentor/ clinical assessor for FCP/ ACP colleagues.  She is an HEE accredited assessor for FCP and currently teaches on the MSc modules for FCP at the AECC University College , Bournemouth. She is an honorary fellow at Bournemouth University.
