Integrating Imaging into Musculoskeletal Practice - 1 Day course - Shoulder

The day includes understanding requesting, interpretation and competency of shoulder imaging. Case study based- teaching, orientation, normal, normal variants, pathological images, evidence base of imaging and how to utilise it to enhance your existing clinical reasoning & patient care.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of the course you will:
- Know the indication for requesting basic imaging for the areas you have studied including lumbar spine, knee and shoulder
- Have a structured method of looking at these images
- Understand where imaging plays a role clinically and pit falls and advantages in the use of imaging and patient care
- Have an understanding of what is normal and what is abnormal in these images
- Have an idea of resources to help you develop your skills
- Discuss how you interpret imaging, imaging reports and how you discuss this with your MSK patients

You will not:
Be legally qualified to request radiology
Be legally covered to interpret radiological examinations or write imaging reports
Know everything about imaging these anatomical areas

Cathy is a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist in Upper Limb Dysfunction who holds BSc Physiotherapy (London 1990), MSc Manipulative Physiotherapy (Queensland, Australia 1996), and Fellowship of the Australian Physiotherapy Association by specialisation (2010).

Cathy was Lead Physiotherapist of the Advanced (Extended scope) Practitioner service at Imperial College Healthcare Trust (1998-2012) where she worked with consultant colleagues in a tertiary shoulder specialist Unit and mentored ESPs around the country to develop competencies in extended skills. During this time, Cathy developed the Imaging course for the MACP alongside Jess Gent, Chris Mercer and Sharon Morgans and was awarded the BESS travelling fellowship (2005).

At University College London (UCL) Cathy leads the Upper Quadrant teaching on the MScs in Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, Paediatric and Adolescent Sports Physiotherapy and Neuro Physiotherapy (painful shoulder). She contributes widely to National and International shoulder meetings every year and is a peer reviewer for Shoulder and Elbow Journal. 

Clinically in private practice, Cathy works alongside consultant and GP colleagues in London and the UK and is the specialist physiotherapist for the Fortius clinic Shoulder MDT comprising shoulder surgeons, pain specialists, neurophysiologists and radiologists. Cathy has jointly developed non-medical referring pathways in private practice in London and clinically mentors UCL MSc students developing into FCP and advanced roles.

Cathy’s specific clinical and research interests include Shoulder Instability, complex upper quadrant pain including hypermobility disorders, adolescent shoulder pain and rehabilitation of overhead Sports (Especially Tennis, Swimming and Water Polo). 

Past clinical experience includes Club physiotherapist to Saracens RFC (1992-1996) and Company Physiotherapist to Birmingham Royal Ballet (1997-1998) and Rambert Dance Company (1998-2004).

 

Cathy is a lecturer at University College London ( UCL) and leads the Upper Quadrant modules of the MSK MSC
