ACP MSK Standard Development Project

The MACP has been working in conjunction with Health Education England and the MSK Physiotherapy Partnership to develop MSK standards for advanced clinical practice in England. The work has involved several stages:

Evaluating the potential accreditation of Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP) in musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy in England (see HEE definitive project document)
Production of additional briefing paper to address mapping recommendations outlined in the initial paper (see additional briefing paper)

There has been broad agreement from the MSK Physiotherapy Partners, MACP Executive Committee and HEE on the progress to date. This agreement allows progression to the second stage of the ACP standard development process.

The initial remit of the project was to:

Review the IFOMPT educational standard and the recommendation within “Accreditation of advanced clinical practice multi methods analysis” to develop explicit language / terminology related to the 4 pillars of advanced practice.

Progress to date:
There has been broad agreement from the MSK Partnership to adopt the ACP additional requirements to the existing IFOMPT standards. However there still remains a need to place the IFOMPT standards within the language of the 4 pillars of advanced practice for ease of use and consistency with prior HEE ACP documentation.

2. Identify mechanisms of governance framework to ensure quality and safety of ACP MSK physiotherapy practice across the UK.

3. Identify routes to accreditation in ACP MSK physiotherapy through professional network membership / reciprocal recognition.

ACP Standard Development: Second Stage

HEE in conjunction with the MACP would like to commission a piece of work to develop the operational aspect of the ACP MSK standards. The aims of this commissioned work would be:

Production of ACP MSK standards document fit for purpose to be used by multi professionals working towards ACP accreditation via HEE.
Identification of the mechanisms of governance framework and quality assurance of ACP MSK physiotherapy practice as part of the accreditation route.
Create an operational strategy for how this accreditation will be implemented online to support portfolio submission / assessment, so that this can be appropriately resourced by all potential routes to membership.

We anticipate the work commitment being around taking 2-3 months to complete by a team of 3-4 individuals, to develop the ACP standard documentation and identify a suitable governance framework.

Nature of Funding: £6,000 for completion of project (shared between members of the task and finish group) – this is to include all costs associated with the commissioned work.

This group will be co-chaired by Helen Welch and Amanda Hensman-Crook and directly link with the educational team in HEE, some of which will be co-opted into the group to ensure the document is in keeping with HEE strategic direction.

Given the nature of the project, and following discussion with our collaborative partners, we felt this would be suited to individuals with a strong educational profile with experience working with the IFOMPT educational standards and/or within ACP MSK physiotherapy. The MACP would therefore like to invite interest from your individuals in taking this piece of work forwards. We expect that there may be considerable interest in this next stage of development and dependent on interest may implement a short listing and interview procedure to award the funding.
