Elsevier and Jane Greening Research Award

This is an award of up to £10,000 (part sponsored by Elsevier in partnership with the MACP) to encourage physiotherapists’ wider participation in research within the field of neuromusculoskeletal physiotherapy. Dr Jane Greening was a trailblazer in the field of Physiotherapy research, merging her unwavering commitment to alleviating pain with a pioneering approach to understanding musculoskeletal conditions through laboratory and measurement tools. A previous MACP Chair and one of the first Physiotherapy Consultants, Dr Greening not only advanced clinical practice but also advocated for the highest standards of evidence-based care. Her legacy is defined by her relentless pursuit of knowledge and her dedication to improving the lives of those living with persistent pain. This award honours her profound impact on the field and inspires future generations of researchers to follow in her footsteps.

Criteria for Applications

Applicants must be full members of the MACP.

Applications will be considered that demonstrate the following research characteristics:

• Demonstrates benefits for patient care

• Enhances the body of clinical physiotherapy knowledge

• Likely to contribute to the development of musculoskeletal physiotherapy

• Costings appear reasonable and controllable

• Addresses current research priorities. (eg see Versus Arthritis and CSP https://www.csp.org.uk/system/files/top_ten_questions.pdf) 

The application should be supported by an individual with the required research skills. Where appropriate, the proposal should include details of an accredited researcher in the chosen field who would be prepared to act as a mentor.

Evaluation of Applications

  • Applications will be assessed by the MACP Research Committee in consultation with external assessors where appropriate.
  • Decision will be sent in writing to the applicant within 6 weeks of the deadline.
  • The decision of the research committee will be final and no correspondence with the applicant will be entered into.
  • The awards will be announced at the MACP AGM, where the successful applicant (or nominated representative) will be presented with the award.

Conditions of the Award

  • It is a condition of the award that all publications and presentations related to the Research acknowledge the support of the MACP and Elsevier.

  • Successful applicants will be expected to present their work at a conference or MACP meeting.

  • It is an expectation that the recipient of the award will submit work for publication to Musculoskeletal Science and Practice. Elsevier will waive open access publication fees for the successful awardee.

  • Successful applicants will be required to provide the MACP with a 1500 word written report within 6 months of completing the project.

  • Provide evidence of mentorship (within a 12-month period) for other members wishing to apply for this award where appropriate.

If the above conditions are not met, the applicant will be expected to reimburse the MACP for the full amount of the award.


Application Procedure

The applicant must complete the Elsevier and Jane Greening Research Award application form online.

The application should include the following information:

• Name, current occupational status, address, and MACP number.

• Brief CV (not > 2 sides of A4) of proposer and supervisor/mentor (where appropriate), including details of research experience.

• Brief summary of the project (no more than 250 words)

• Outline of the research project (1000-1500 words): title, background, plan of Investigation, proposed analysis, ethical considerations, dissemination plans, references, and timetable (not including reference list)

• Where ethical approval is required, details of where the application will be submitted are required. If the study has already received ethical approval, the approval letter must be submitted with the application.

• A section must be included on how the research fulfils the above criteria.

• A detailed breakdown of costings should be included. Please indicate how the finances will be managed (for example, university or hospital finance department).

• Any other funding applied for/received should be stated.

Applicants may be requested to submit additional information if required by the reviewers.

Referees

References are required from two people and should be submitted with the application. The referees must have a detailed knowledge of the applicant and be in a position to make a judgement of the applicant’s ability to successfully undertake the proposed study (with or without mentorship as necessary).

Payment of monies

Monies will only be paid on receipt of invoices detailing full costs and ensuring these meet the breakdown of costs indicated in the application form.

  • Eligibility: Full members.
  • Frequency: Once a year
  • Closing: 31 May 2025
  • Outcome: 1500- word report, journal submission in Musculoskeletal Science and Practice and conference presentation. Where appropriate offer mentorship for future applicants.
